The sad news is that any time this year over a thousand companies will lay off thousands as we feel the impact of the spiralling global economic crisis and recession. The good news is that we have been forewarned and we all know that recession or not, it's getting harder to afford the increased cost of living. Therefore ,here are few tips on smart living during hard economic times

Let's wash our clothes less often. Many of us wash our clothes unnecessarily after each use, whether it's dirty or not. If you have worn a dress for a few hours (say for dinner) you can probably forgo washing until after the next time you wear it. Invest in jeans and khakis as they can be used multiple times before washing. Change into play/casual clothes after school or work to keep good clothes looking nice. Always wash full loads of clothes and dishes.Shorten your showers.Let your lawn brown out during dry spell;it will come back during the rains. If you can't stand it,water your lawns before sunrise and at sunset by using rinse from dishes(add a little ash to it).Turn off the water while you brush your teeth. It's a lot cheaper, and better for the environment to use home made liquid soaps sold in the estates Only use white sheets, towels, and washcloths as they can be bleached and look great.

Turn off lights and other appliances when not in use.Take advantage of natural light.Wash with cold water whenever possible.Buy energy efficient appliances like light bulbs and fridges with freezers on the top or bottom and; without automatic ice makers.Always Keep the freezer full by simply putting jugs filled with water in them. It's less expensive to keep a full freezer cold than an empty one. To make dry batteries last longer store them in the refrigerator. Avoid clothes that require dry cleaning.

It is expensive to set up home internet;you need a computer(desk top or lap top,and an Internet Service Provider),scanners and printers. Simply use a local cyber caf.You can also use your cellphone's internet.Did you know that it costs cents to check for your email from your cellphone?Use email or instant messaging instead of calling long(and short) distance. You can use internet phone services like computer to computer phones and skype for the cheapest calls rates.Facebook messaging is cheaper than cellphone SMS!Must you have cable TV in your house when three quarters of your time is spent away from the house?
