Since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, there has been rumor and stigma surrounding Eastern Europe. You can still feel it lingering in the air in smaller villages, like some people just never received the news. Talk of the KGB and Soviet spies can still be overheard in cafes from the elderly locals. This is specifically why couples looking for a new and exciting romantic week away should consider the old-country of Eastern Europe.
Belize is a lot of fun, and you can create a wonderful itinerary in Barcelona, but the combination of war stricken ruins, ancient fortifications and speculation of underground criminal government activity give the lands of Eastern Europe a dangerous and intimate feel.
Not that you will ever be in any real danger, but it is fun to pretend. The line, "Speak closely, people may be listening," comes to mind when considering cities like Budapest and Prague. I am sure your travel agent may have their own idea of great destinations, but I would like to suggest Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania and Moldova. They have a very private and old-country feel to them and will most certainly leave a lasting impression on you and your lady friend.
Located on the north-eastern part of the Balkan Peninsula is a tiny Slavic land called Bulgaria. Your significant other may be apprehensive of your travel plans, saying things like, "Isn't that a third world country?" and "Aren't the women there really hairy?" Rest assured however, this will not be a trip she will soon forget.
Fly into Sofia (the nation's capital) and spend a few days lounging about the city. The "Sheraton Sofia" and the "Hotel Downtown" are both very nice and staff share excitement in directing you to points of interest. The official language is Bulgarian, however many people speak Russian and English too. American dialect is softer and rounder than how those from the UK speak English and the Bulgarian locals find us pleasant to listen to. They also enjoy hearing travelers attempt their peculiar language, so pick up a few phrases.
There is a contrasting mix between very old world architecture and lifestyle and an enthusiasm for Western modernization in Sofia that gives the town a unique charm. On arrival in Bulgaria, and again on your departure, spend a few days in this city blending in and enjoying the native cuisine, but you'll want to move on. The real reason for taking holiday in Bulgaria is the Black Sea Coast.
