America The Great
A chill in the air on a cloudy March day;
hungry, God Bless, her banner did say
Leaning against a large Wal Mart sign
zooming passengers, in cars, totally blind
or just trying to be, they see her there;
alone, haggard, with a fixed stare
dirty not showered, the smell of the streets;
fingernails crusted, with yesterdays eats
Her story is told time and again;
being in shelters one cannot win
Down and out looking for rest,
identity stolen, that is the best,
Next came a tent near I-95,
her and John just barely alive
Waiting in line to receive some chow,
only for men, women not allowed;
waaaaay across town is the line for her;
how to get there becomes a blur
Now they're eating Wendy's, content and warm;
another day awakens, a new challenge born
Survival for some is a frightening game,
Now what happens without a name?
