Dog of dogs! What a magnificent breed is the German Shepherd, deservedly adored by so many dog lovers, all over the world!
This highly popular breed first appeared in the late 1800's, developed in Germany by a breeder, Max von Stephanitz, who wanted to establish a reliable, sheep-herding dog, of good intelligence and with the ability to work hard. Von Stephanitz, after years of selective breeding, produced this handsome animal we know today as the German Shepherd, a breed universally acclaimed.
They are large dogs, with the male attaining a height of 25-26 inches and the female a little smaller. The male might weigh up to 90 pounds. The coat of the German Shepherd is particularly attractive, a thick double coat with a soft under- layer of fine fur and a coarser outer coat in various colors, such as tan and black, silver and black, cream and black, or solid black, or sable. The beautiful coat needs daily attention with a good brush to remove loose hair. Note that the German Shepherd does shed hair continuously and will, seasonally, shed more heavily. The coat may be short, medium or long haired in type, but all need regular brushing; they rarely require bathing.
The German Shepherd is a dog of superior intelligence as well as handsome appearance and is extremely quick at learning. Training in obedience should begin early and the young dog is very responsive to specialized training tracking, for example. The breed is often used for police work and has maintained an excellent record for search and rescue operations. They are alert and bold, with a high degree of courage and loyalty in their temperament. Always remember that they were bred from herding stock and that they will attempt to herd, whenever an opportunity arises.
The high intelligence of the German Shepherd means that their minds must be occupied; a bored dog can become a menace in the home and will turn to the destruction of furniture and digging up of garden plants for something to do. It isn't a good thing for the dog for the dog to be left alone for long periods they crave company and activity. They do need a great deal of exercise and attention and if you aspire to ownership of a German Shepherd, you must be willing to supply these requirements. The dogs may be kept in a small house, or apartment, but then must be taken out for regular exercise sessions if they are to maintain fitness and condition, and not become bored. This breed is not suitable, however, for a first-dog owner, an elderly or infirm person, or someone unwilling to go for regular, lengthy walks. This is a strong, lively-minded breed and the potential owner must be aware of the challenges, as well as the joys, that they offer.
In return, if you can meet the demands of this wonderful dog, you can acquire a loyal companion and trusty friend. They are superb watchdogs, protective and fierce, when required. Before choosing a puppy, be sure to read all available information on the dog so that you fully understand the benefits and the needs of the breed; you will be amply rewarded in owning such a dog.
Be prepared to fall in love with your German Shepherd!
