There are several keys to repeating as a Super Bowl Champion in the modern National Football League. In today's NFL which strives for team parity it is even more difficult to repeat as Super Bowl Champion than in past decades.
Keeping the Coaching Staff Complete
It has become the "In" thing to hire an offensive or defensive coordinator from the champion team to be your head coach. When a team loses a coordinator then it becomes difficult to keep their momentum up. Even if the same system is ran on offense or defense it will still be taught by a new coach. Also when the old coordinator leaves to take the head coaching job, he often takes others from the staff with him to become HIS coordinators. If the team keeps it's entire coaching staff, it is easier to keep their momentum up and repeat as champions.
Free Agency
Teams will often target free agents of the Super Bowl winning team in the National Football League. Even if they only drive up the price of the player and he is resigned it drives up the team's salary cap.
But the Super Bowl winner usually loses a few key free agents which affects on the field play as well as team chemistry. Keeping the same starting lineup and even the backups drastically improves the chances of a repeat. This even more important on the offensive and defensive lines where they depend on knowing how the other linemen play.
Also if other teams drive up the price to retain their free agents, the team trying to repeat can't target other team's free agents they may want to sign.
Injuries
You will notice that most Super Bowl winners have a lucky season as far as injured players missing games go. If that team can put back to back healthy seasons together then they are much more likely to repeat as champs.
Desire to win
The team must stay hungry to win it all and be willing to make the same sacrifices to get to the big game again. There is a natural letdown after you win the first time and some players will get complacent. Off the field distractions like many interviews and endorsement deals may deter off season conditioning in players.
Players not in top physical condition tend to get injured and thus hurt the team's chance of repeating. So the players must be willing to make a strong commitment to off season workouts and keep in top shape.
Strength of Schedule
When a team wins a Super Bowl they are given a harder schedule for the next season. They will be playing teams with a good won loss record from the season in which they won it all. Being able to stay in top form and beat better teams than the year before in the regular season is a key to repeating as Super Bowl Champions.
