Poetry: Fighting spirit

Save It

I give to you this word
"Forever"
Take it please
I have no use for it

Such a emphatic word
Grossly over-used
And pledged to last
Eternally

In hearing its echo
The significance is lost
Like a sizzling fire
It has been singed and burned
Misused and abused

It should be saved
For those who know the practice
Who know the true meaning
For those who believe in fairytales

How sweet it sounds
In its divinity
Romantic, dramatic, poetic
Yet this vowed and gifted word
Suffers disgrace in repetition

With a stone's ear
I hear it used constantly
Floating aimlessly from lips
With good and honorable intentions
Falling carelessly in the same world
As broken hearts and promises

Even I, the rigid optimist
See no point in the fastidious manner
Of a word used so recklessly
There are just some words
Far too big for this world
And should be saved for the next

So please
Take this word
I have no use for it
It only serves as a reminder
That there is no such thing
As fairy-tales
Or "Forever"
