I would say that it is quite the opposite. Take away the seductive, scantily-clad images of half-nude or nude images of mostly young men and women, set against pop and rock music, from music videos, porns, and other sexually-explicit imagery. Sex education shows the reality of sex, the possibility of pregnancy and STD's, as well as everything else that goes along with it, including date rape, obssession, stalking, violence and assault. It's not all about encouraging, it's about educating in a responsible fashion, so teens are aware of the reality, making informed decisions, without uninformed peer pressure. Sex education is the far, far lesser of two evils.
In other words, sex education helps to make informed decisions, not uninformed decisions, that may have disasterous consequences for a young teen's life. Even if it is your son, he doesn't have to carry a child to have all of the disasterous consequences that can go with a teen-age female being pregnant. Becoming a father at fourteen or fifteen is going to have the same impact as if he was a young girl getting pregnant. His life is going to be severely impacted from that point on, leading to ramifications for his life for years to come. He may quit school, ending in a low wage job.
Sex education cannot necessarily prevent all of the ills so far mentioned. Remember the so called pact between the seventeen girls to get pregnant and for all of them to be there for each other's kids. Teens will do sex (and sometimes deliberately become pregnant) whether they receive sex education or not. At the very least, it can make them think twice before doing it. Sex education in schools are important, but it is also important for the parents not to suddenly become like pieces of wood and say nothing. You, as parents, must help shepherd your children through those early, primordial stages of their development, including some degree of counselling.
Sadly enough, even in an evolved society, many parents are still like pieces of wood and say nothing to their kids. Sex education in the schools is critical, but without some degree of parental involvement, it is not complete and can become meaningless. One works with the other. It doesn't necessarily mean that as a parent, you have to go through all of the machinations of sexuality. Just try and answer some of your little Darla or Jack's questions. A lot are going to be stirred up by the sex education that they receive in school.
Be thoughtful and try and answer as many of them as possible. You can't put your children in a bubble, either way. In the digital/quantum age, they are bombarded 24/7 by sexual innuendo, imagery and sound-all in sparkling, optimized clarity for reasonable, little or no cost. Sex education in schools, and by you answering at least some of their questions, can go a long way towards them not onliy in having a healthy sex life, but a good life as well. After all, you want your kids to develop into well-adjusted young adults, right.
