Which dog breed makes the best pet?

Asking which dog breed makes the best pet is comparable to asking whether cats or dogs are better pets. There is no right or wrong answer, and different people will have different opinions based on past experience and personal preference. In certain cases, one breed may be the best pet for a big, active family, while another breed may be perfect for a single person living a quiet life.

Having spent most of my working years as a veterinary technician, I've witnessed most dog breeds, from the popular ones (such as Labrador Retrievers and Poodles) to the rare (like Skye Terriers or Otterhounds.) I have also had the pleasure of watching just about every type of family with many different varieties of dogs. All things considered, there are several dog breeds that will generally make a good pet for just about anyone.

Golden Retriever: The Golden Retriever is almost always in the top five when it comes to the most popular dog breeds in America. Although they are large, sometimes hyper-active, and hairy, Goldens are one of the most lovable breeds out there. The almost always have exuberantly happy personalities. Its very hard, no matter what type of "dog person" you are, to dislike a Golden. With time and training, most Goldens grow out of their puppy years into a calm, ever-present, happy friend. They are usually wonderful dogs for children and adults alike.

Labrador Retriever: The Lab is often the most popular breed in the US, and there is a good reason for this. The ultimate family dog, Labs are versatile, friendly, known for being good with children and generally pleasant to be around. Labradors tend to have quite a bit of energy, but when channeled correctly (through training and lots of exercise) they become awesome family dogs. Labs love to be around their people, whether that consists of one person or ten.

Pug: I personally have not met a Pug I didn't like. They are friendly, comical, and easy keepers. Although Pugs can have a lot of energy, their small size makes them more manageable. Then again, don't be too fooled by that tiny stature. Pugs are tough little guys that can withstand a lot (from kids in particular.) They are known for several health issues, mainly eye problems and breathing issues due to their shortened noses, but Pugs are generally a healthy, robust breed. They will fit in with just about any family.

Yorkshire Terrier: For those who prefer small dogs, and don't mind the expense of grooming, the Yorkie can be a wonderful companion. Although they
