Bulimia nervosa or usually simply called bulimia is a type of eating disorder. A person with bulimia will eats a lot of food in a short amount of time (binging) and then will try to prevent weight gain by getting rid of the food (purging).
Bulimia is not a typical disorder that is known or understood to many people. The most common victim of this disease is mostly young woman who took it to the great length to look good but made those weird actions during the process.
Bulimia is not a disease. So there is no specific pills to treat bulimia. Most the doctors could do is offering advise and counseling.
Bulimia is simply an eating disorder. The main characteristic of this disorder is a cycle of binge eating that followed by action to reverse it by purging. Purging may includes vomiting, fasting, using laxatives, enemas, diuretic, making his or herself throw up or taking laxatives in the form of pills or liquids that speed up the movement of food through their body and lead to a bowel movement and exercise excessively beyond the average.
Well, it may sound or look weird, but that are exactly what bulimia sufferer have done. You could call it crazy, but it really is a disease which could cause hurtful consequences if not properly treated.
Bulimia is also an addictive disease. After a repeated cycle of binging and purging, the sufferer of bulimia could indeed trapped in the cycle and facing the risk of greater health issues such as gastric problem, dehydration, ulcer and imbalance of nutrients. The seemingly minor ailments could lead to serious health issue if the situation not rectified. Electrolyte imbalance for instance, could disturb heart rhythm which leads to cardiac arrest that could be fatal.
Bulimia sufferers are victims of circumstances, to say the least. Just look around the fashion industry or entertainment. Everything is about being thin and having a good body look. Some sports industry such as gymnastic, dance, cheer-leading and many more obviously emphasize the good looking factor for those who want to excel. Those involved then have no option, but to maintain a good body figure or risked being left out.
Bulimia has a long history in medical fraternity. It was named and described by British psychiatrist Gerald Russel in 1979. A clinical treatment by a practicing doctor or psychiatrist is the best option to treat bulimia. A good psychiatrist could diagnose the symptom and give a proper treatment. But that is not always being the case.
