The library is the holy grail for avid learners and readers who want a quiet spot to mesh with all the other well learned people of this world. I myself am not one of those people, but on the other hand I am the person who would do the really annoying things in the library. I probably could get thrown out or atleast get a few shhh's from some frowning faces on any given day.
Most of the things I might do or other annoyers, aren't on purpose but they come naturally to someone who is out of their comfort zone. I hate the library. For me and others, it is a place to gather the required research and not a place that gives any pleasure.
So hold on to your seat as I give you 10 annoying things the passive aggressive people in the world might do to offend the loyal library patron.
First, not knowing how to use the library and very loudly asking for help. Not only are we loud but we are confused and require a library worker to guide us step by step through the system we learned how to work in elementary school. This frist annoyance will get you quite a few roll of the eyes from the loyalist.
Second, chewing gum and popping it. I get nervous when I feel out of my comfort zone so chewing gum has a calming effect on me. Most of the time people who pop gum are unaware that they are doing it. For the most part, people get very annoyed but will never say anything to a stanger to get them to stop.
Third, having your cell phone go off constantly while you are in the quiet zone. Yes, we try to answer softly but this is also a biggie that gets you lots of nasty looks.
Fourth, eating a delicious snack food. Of course you are hiding it from the staff but that healthy apple is so loud and those fat filled chips really make a lasting impression on those around you.
Fifth, asking the loyal patrons for help when you are lost and not the library staff. They are always so polite even when annoyed by you, then they direct you to a staff member.
Sixth, when you have no baby sitter and have to bring your two little ones that are messing with eveything while you try to work. You constantly correct and stop them but they persist and then you catch the ugly looks out the corner of your eye from the loyal patrons.
Seventh, remember we are out of our environment so staying awake isn't easy. Yes, to fall asleep and then snore, is really annoying to the ones who love the library.
Eighth, occupying the equipment for longer than any normal person should and then tearing it up. You got it, the equipment has to be shut down until a later time. This one gets you a huge sigh from several people waiting to use that particular piece of equipment.
Ninth, having your friends show up, who equally don't like the library, to keep you company. They are there to keep you company in the most boring place they can think of and then they proceed to do some of the above mentioned things in one through eight. Now this probably gets us reported to the staff and they come over and reprimand you.
And tenth, complaining loudly about everything you do in the library. Not only complaining but talking extemely loud about how much you hate the library. Now this one gets you sighs, rolls of the eyes, ugly frowns and everything I mentioned above. At this point, the staff and the loyal patrons want you gone and hope to never see you again.
People who violate all of these ten things have no malice intentions, they are just out of their element and should pay someone to do their bidding at the public library. That's better than annoying everyone you come in contact with and when they recognize you out in another public sector they won't whisper about you behind your back.
