Marketing your small business during the recession

Companies can market their small business during the recession and gain a market share while their competitors eliminate marketing. Many businesses have been forced to cut back on advertising, but that has opened doors for small business owners to be selective on where they spend their money.

The four keys to success are: 1) market your product as a need; 2) reduce the price of your product to be feasible; 3) use words that appeal to buyers; and 4) advertise in places where the buyers will be. You will have to be resourceful in your strategies and flexible in your deliverance.

Market Your Product as a Need:

Buyers are not spending money on desires or non-essential goods but they WILL spend money on needs. Therefore, your marketing strategy should assert your product as a need.

Make the Price of Your Product Feasible:

You need to lower the price of your product to meet the feasibility of the buyer. Your profit margin may be down but it will keep you in business and keep the buyer coming back.

Use Words That Appeal to Buyers Right Now:

"Buy one, get one free" is not what buyers want to hear because they can't afford the first one. A positive slogan and one that means virtually the same thing is "Half price special". Words like sale, reduced price, markdown, cut, on special, off or sale convince buyers that they will be able to afford it now that you've lowered the price. Words that imply a bargain or getting something free when buying one item at regular price says that the price is too high even for the free item.

Advertise in Places Where Most Buyers Will Be:

Gas prices and frustration are both high and money and patience are low, and buyers don't want to be driving around to stores hunting for bargains. Most buyers in today's world will be on the World Wide Web, and that is where you need to be. Here are some suggestions:

-Get yourself a domain and advertise your products

-Advertise on sites like Google Adsense and Twitter

-Sell your products on Ebay

-Set up your own blog

The recession can present the opportunity of a lifetime for small businesses to take over where big businesses have left off. It works because people are searching for deals and your strategy will appeal to the vanity side of the buyer that says you're going to help them get through this.

Good marketing strategies can turn a desire into a need, and when you are willing to meet the buyer halfway, everyone profits. Together, the wise and the prudent will come out of this recession as winners.
