Well I would say the best way to limit a hangover is simple, don't drink too much. Now I am going to guess you failed to do that or are not planning on following that advice if you are reading this. So let's just forget I mentioned that first little bit. I will deal with the problem of a hangover in 3 phases 1) proactively, 2) actively and 3) reactively.
So before you start drinking:
-Put something in your stomach: My worst hangovers have always come from when I went drinking on an empty stomach, when I am hung over everything is wrecked, and my stomach is ground zero. The best thing you can do is fill it with something that will keep the alcohol from being absorbed. Preferably you do this before you start drinking or before getting drunk. If you try this while drunk it won't be pretty later.
I recommend the following:
Hamburger fries and a shake.
Grilled steak/chicken/sausage etc this once kept me sober all night, no matter what I drank.
Olive oil-eat it with pasta, with bread, with whatever, its olive oil. Tastes good and is good for you.
Buttermilk- I've never tried it, but it was a precaution my Irish grandma used.
Ok so now that you are drinking here are simple tips:
-Don't mix: Stick to the same thing all night. Do not go around the world in 80 liquors. You will regret it.
-Don't drink anything sugary: It helps the absorption of alcohol and aids in the sugar crash you will go through which is part of a hangover.
-Avoid shots: They get you drunk faster and break they don't mix tip.
Do drink water: Alcohol dehydrates you. It is the major component of the hangover. Cranberry juice is also good and absorbs faster then water.
Ok so now you are drunk, well if you have the presence of mind do this:
-Drink more water: Flush your system
-Pop an Airborne or multivitamin or both: That alcohol is going to deplete you of vitamins
-Sleep it off sitting up: 1 in case you puke, 2 helps avoid the bed spins
Ok so now you are hung over; well the best laid plans...
Everyone has their preferred hangover cure. Some like hair of the dog. Some call in sick and sleep it off. Some say eat. However if you are like me you can't sleep, you're sick to your stomach, don't even want to look at booze let alone drink it and you have to go to work. Well this is my no fail, sure fire hangover remedy: pedialyte.
That's right pedialyte. If you don't have it in the house, stop and get it. Do not get the unflavored or the bubblegum. Fruit flavor is ok, but you are best off with grape. Now nurse that bottle like you should have nursed your drink last night. You'll feel a lot better in an hour or two.
Some other things that help me when hung over:
-Fruit and bread: they help settle the stomach and put nutrients back into you body.
