In my eyes an RPG must have immersive world you can get lost in and has a lot of choice and options for players, also it must include a good levelling up structure , with this said I will give you my top 5 role-playing games of the current times.

1)Fallout 3 (PS3,Xbox 360,PC)

I know this is not always fully classed as a role-playing game but in certain contexts it is, there is a huge immersive post nuclear world you can explore and traverse to get to various locations with its own inhabitants where no two are the same. Fallout also has great levelling up system and has so much variation that my character was completely different from the majority of my friends and it also makes the game more playable for people who either like FPS or RPG it's a great mix of both. It has a good storyline further increased with expansions for Xbox 360 and PC versions , this is one of those games that will never be forgotten.

2)Monster Hunter Freedom 2ND Generation (PSP)

This game is another action RPG which has captured the hearts and minds of many gamers worldwide with its diversity and captivating world, everything in the world of monster hunter is unique to the wide variety of armours to the stupidly huge weapons it's a game for this generation and the next.

There is no levelling up system but your characters defence and health changes with what you have equipped and when you are fighting huge monsters there is nothing better than that little bit more health to see you survive the battle, majority of the monsters in this game can get to enormous sizes and some even do not fit on the screen at times making these battles exhilarating and sometimes even tactical and its worth every penny.

3)Golden Axe Warrior (Mega Drive , Master System , Xbox 360)

Yes I know this game was released on the Sega Mega Drive and the Master System but February 21st 2009 it was re-released on the Xbox 360 as a collection box set , this was an RPG to remember and still is playable due to its storyline. It was basic but the world was huge for a 8 BIT world and it has a good soundtrack, the story was you had to get nine crystals and destroy the evil Death Adder , it was basic and combat wasn't flashy but it was an addictive games and it deserved to have a re release.

4)Eternal Sonata (Xbox 360)

This game was one of the great RPG's released in the Xbox 360 lifetime, the cute and bright 3D Anime graphics and the deep and quite dark story that covers life, death, disease and suicide has made a in depth RPG that has the hallmark of any great.

The levelling up is basic with killing enemies gain experience and thus levelling up but it's the unusual battle system where it incorporates the shadows and light in the battle arena to which attacks a character can use. It has a timer where the player can move there character and do attacks until the timer is up, its innovative and is one of the battle systems I could use without throwing my controller across the room.

5)Final Fantasy Dissidia (PSP)

This game is more fighting than an RPG but it includes all final fantasy characters from 1 to 11 and features destructible environments and trademark moves from all characters, it also includes a levelling system and equipable item from the series. Its good game for Final fantasy fans out there and a good game for non final fantasy players who like a beat em up style game. The story is the traditional dark versus light and all the characters from the different final fantasy's back stories for this game entwine brilliantly and there is no how come they are there?' moments it's a Fabulous game which kept me entertained for months.

There you go those are my favourite role playing style games in the last 3 years.
