Is abortion a sin?

by Kevin Olivier

Created on: February 21, 2009

Biblically and Religio-Logically speaking, abortion is NOT a sin. In the following paragraphs, I will prove beyond a doubt that abortion is not a sin, and can not be seen as morally wrong, to any religious person.

When we talk about abortion, we speak of the "Termination of pregnancy and expulsion of an embryo or of a fetus that is incapable of survival." This could mean either by operating the fetus out physically, or taking any sort of medication to stop its formation. Generally speaking, most catholics and christians hold that the termination of any life before it is born is considered to be abortion.

First of all, I would like to show that even at the beginning of the bible, the definition of a person is stated by God. (As a side note, the word translated to person from the hebrew bible literally meant a "living soul".)

Proof 1: Genesis 2:7 God made Adam's body out of the dust of the earth. Then, the "man became a living soul" only after God "breathed into his nostrils the breath of life." -religioustolerance

In the above example, it clearly shows that personhood starts when the baby takes its first breath. Since adam was defined as a person only after God metaphorically breathed into his nose, the definition of a living soul, or person, in God's eyes is one that has received God's breath of life. Its not until after a fetus is developed and birthed that anyone can claim it is biblically considered a person. In my eyes, a fetus is a living being, but I hold that if a person takes their morality from the bible, and they believe it to be true, they can not simply pick and choose what they believe in based on whether they think its right or not; they must either except the bible in whole as the true word of God, or not.

Now assuming you believe the words of the bible to be completely flawless, being written by the Almighty Himself, then you would have noticed that Jesus talks about the difficulty of getting into heaven (Although this may seem irrelevant, it all comes together). Jesus says the gate is narrow, and actually references that it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to get into heaven. (Really? Is God discriminating against people on the basis of wealth? What about the catholic church? The wealthiest organization in the world!) Anyways, here we see that it is extremely difficult to get into Heaven. It is that much more difficult if you are the kind of person who doesn't follow every commandment to the T. Yes, you
