How to find work in a recession

While the economy goes through the deepest recession in about two decades, and people are still saying we could eventually hit a depression, there is no reason why you cannot find a job. The key to finding work is to know where to look, and while a lot of places are laying off workers, or cutting back on the workforce, there are plenty of companies that are going strong. The key is to look for recession-proof industries, where people are going to find work when the economy is going badly.

Right now if you want to get a job, you should try working for a company that makes something that you would need on a regular basis. Try finding work at a cereal company, or a paper making company, things that people use regardless of what the economy is. People will still eat cereal, and they will still use paper, and pencils and other tangible goods.

Try to find a job with a start-up company, or on the Internet. Despite the sagging economy, I am still making money writing on the Internet. The money isn't great necessarily, but it is work, and even if this was the only job I had, I would take a little money every month as opposed to no money at all. With a start-up company, they are looking for entry level people to join them, and don't pay much, but if all you want is a salary, then go for it.

Starting your own business can be a good way to find a job during a recession. Small businesses make up a large percentage of the US economy, and they don't require a lot of start up in most cases. If you just make a MySpace page for your business, or advertise on Facebook, you can reach a broad audience. Your customer base just needs to be people who are in the neighborhood, or people you might know from another job.

You can try lowering your salary demands as well. You never know if a company will be hiring, but if you offer to take a pay cut, you may find yourself employed, and then get some more money when the recession is over. It can be a good way to find a job, or sometimes even keep the job you may be about to lose right now.

So there are ways to find work during a recession, but you just have to be creative. Try starting your own business, or try getting a job on the side. Look for companies that are going to make what people need, or staple items. If not, you can always offer to work for less, and see what happens. There are jobs out there, but you just have to look harder to find them.
