I get asked about my diet, so I thought I would share some quick tips I live by:
Nothing fried, no fast foods, no soda, and occasional alcohol, which means once or twice per month. I eat more meals (approx 6) in smaller portions, almost snack sizes. Carry around a protien bar, piece of fruit or small meals prepared to keep you away from vending machinces and snack bars.
After the gym, I prepare a protien shake blended with bananas for potassium, and strawberries and will substitute a couple meals with a good shake. It can be mixed with water, but I use 1% milk and even yogurt. I am big on salads and will again mix yogurt with ranch for a dressing, using a small amount for flavor, don't drown it.
Find good fatty foods to eat, Peanuts are a good example of such. And as with all disciplines, rewards are necessary, but try not to overindulge in sweets or alcohol, just because it has been awhile. Find foods that are good for everyone in the house so you aren't tempted by kids cereals and snacks.
I like chicken, tuna, fish and shrimp, next to rice or steamed veggies. I do enjoy a steak every so often, bi-monthly if that, but will replace most red meat meals with Turkey instead. I don't kill myself or starve myself, deprivation is no way to live, the key is moderation. The balance between diet and exercise is they key. Just as you don't want all food in take and no exercise, all exercise and no food intake is no better, find the balance that works for you. Food is the fuel that keeps you going, and sadly enough, too many of us worry about the highest grade gasoline to put in our cars, but then turn around and eat the lowest grade food for our bodies. You can always get a new car people!
This is a fairly lax diet, but coupled with a firm grasp on regular fitness, you may see results in yourself that will give you confidence to keep pushing forward. Keep in mind, we are all different in body type and activity level, so find what works for you, this is just what happens to work for me.
Good Luck and Bon apetite!
