The science fiction genre in films for 2009 is quite strong. Here is a short list of movies that, thus far, are set to impress the audiences around the globe.
Watchmen - Zack Snyder, director of the movie 300, is bringing this heralded graphic novel to life. The tale follows the Watchmen, a group of vigilante superheroes, that have broken apart thanks to new laws, in an alternate 1985. However, when one of the members dies, a mystery unfolds into what could be the end of all existence. This is not a typical superhero origin story, however, so those who have no interest in seeing this might want to reconsider that decision. Also, it's far from child appropriate, since it contains multiple graphic scenes within its 3 hour span. Releases March 6th, 2009.
Monsters vs. Aliens -This 3D animated kid friendly sci-fi adventure follows the adventure of a young girl, who is transformed into a giant by alien technology. With the help of her monster sidekicks, they face off against the oncoming alien menace. A throwback to the era of 1950s science fiction, this movie sports a cast of famous actors, including Hugh Laurie, Reese Witherspoon, Stephen Colbert, and Keifer Sutherland. Opens in theaters March 27th, 2009.
Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen - The toys are back again, and director Michael Bay is setting up another tale of transforming robots and big explosions. Cast members return, like Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox, for a sequel that is bound to be bigger and better than the first film. The story is simple enough for any fan of the toys to guess: the Decepticons come to earth in force and battle Optimus Prime and his group of Autobots. Also, the main bad robot this time around is Devastator, a transformer composed of multiple smaller robots. Coming in June 26th, 2009.
Star Trek XI - J.J. Abrams, the director of Lost, is bringing a new tale of the famous Star Trek series. A new cast of actors have been selected to play the roles of the original Star Trek Crew in this prequel film. Not much else is known about this film, as it is being kept close to the chest. It should still please fans and newcomers alike. Arriving in theaters on May 8, 2009.
9 - Producers Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov, the director of Wanted, join together to share the tale of 9, a sack-clothed character in a post-apocalyptic world. When giant machines start terrorizing the neighborhood, it's up to 9 and his fellow sack-people community to save humanity. The cast sports Elijah Wood and Jennifer Connelly, and director Shane Acker takes the helm of this movie based off the short film he made. Coming to theaters September 9th, 2009.
