Naming Your Canine Family Member
When you get a new puppy or dog, the most important thing to remember is that he or she is a new family member, and the name you choose should be appropriate for your family and for the dog. Puppy names can be originated based on the personality the puppy displays. Quiet, well behaved puppies lend themselves to more sedate names - Lady, Knight, Princess, Sleepy, Slow Poke - whereas a rambunctious pup would be suited to Trouble, Destroyer, Mischief or Terror. Some people have always named their dogs for former presidents, types of food, or the time of year when they get the puppy or dog. For example, a male dog would be named Lyndon while his female companion would be named Lady Byrd. A white and black pup could be named Pepper, or a dog that appears striped could be named Peppermint. Dogs with grayish highlights could be named Silver. Its really a case of a little imagination goes a long way.
Another consideration, and a most important one, is that chances are very high that at some time in your pet's life you will be outside calling for him or her. So while "Stupid" may seem appropriate for the puppy who continually bumps into walls or falls off the furniture, standing in your front yard hollering "Stupid" may embarass you and upset the neighbors.
Male dog names that also merit consideration - Franklin, Rowlf (like the dog on the Muppet's), Butch, Bear, Moses, Teddy, King - the list is infinite. Female dog names that can work well - Trixi, Lady, Princess, Sue, or any other girls name, Sweetie, Darlin, Cutie Pie - this is also a limitless list.
Unique dog names also reflect the personality of the dog, or denote a particular trait. The dog who can't seem to stay out of the food dish could be Miss Piggy or Wilbur (from Charlotte's Web). The pup who lives to chase a tennis ball can be called McEnroe or Venus. The adorable canine who can't stop destroying your yard would be a good Digger. Scrounger would be the one who can't stay out of the trash. Chewy won't leave your shoes alone.
Last, but not least, whatever name you choose for your new family member should be one you are comfortable with saying for many years to come. Dogs and puppies are a long term commitment, and one that is well worth your time and effort.
