Poetry: Drug addiction

by Michael Penner

Created on: February 20, 2009

Now you'll want, but you won't need.
Now the fight begins.
The dark inside wants to reclaim you.
Now we'll see who wins.

Draw a circle twice around you.
Fight like hell to keep inside.
Beautiful, blissful things surround you.
Feelings for sale, for the ride.

You must have been screaming inside.
From darkness you climbed to the sun.
We watched with our arms open wide.
The struggle for light has begun.

Right now you're learning how
To suffer the pain of control.
They'll promise to help and console you.
Don't touch them, they'll swallow you whole.

Yes, my friend. Don't say a word.
Don't say a thing.
I've been there before,
Desire at war
With my reasoning.

The world wants to wrap around you.
Take your soul,
And bathe and drown you
In its dying light.

You'll always be screaming inside.
From darkness you'll cling to the sun.
We'll be here, arms open wide.
The struggle for light must be won.

So then, forever now,
You'll suffer the pain of control.
They'll promise to help and console you.
Don't touch them.
Don't give up your soul.
