Many people look at owning an exotic pet as a sign of wealth or status. Bengal
cats are just one of the many exotic pets being added to the growing exotic pet trend. Since Bengal
cats can make perfect house pets, it's important to purchase the cat because you truly want a loving pet and not for a status symbol. As with any pet, Bengal
cats require not only affection and attention, but a responsible owner.
~ Typical Costs
The first cost is the purchase price, which will run anywhere from $500 to $1,000. This may scare off many potential owners, but for those that truly want a Bengal, the price tag means absolutely nothing.
After you've found a reputable breeder and picked out your cute little Bengal kitten, you will encounter costs for feeding, toys, bedding, and veterinarian visits. Most normal cat foods and toys are perfect for Bengal cats.
~ Temperament and Training
Bengal cats have been bred to be loving and intelligent. They tend to be very affectionate and active. All cats, not matter what their breed, will have their own individual personalities, but overall, you can expect your cat to get along with others quite well. Introducing your Bengal into the family as a kitten will ensure they connect positively with adults, children, and other pets. However, it is important to talk to your breeder before choosing a kitten to ensure their personality fits your household as closely as possible.
Bengal cats can be trained, especially when it comes to walking on a leash.
Since they are an intelligent breed, they can learn quickly. Training will depend on your Bengal's own unique personality. Cats are naturally independent and may end up telling you what they will and won't do.
~ Other Responsibilities
Breeders require you to have your Bengal
cat spayed or neutered. Unless you are planning to be a breeder yourself, you will more than likely sign a contract to have your Bengal fixed when you purchase your kitten. This prevents overpopulation and territorial tendencies such as spraying.
Bengal cats should be kept indoors as much as possible. If you have an enclosed yard, you can let your cat play outdoors, but you should keep a close eye on them. If your yard isn't enclosed, you should leash train your Bengal
and only let them outside on a leash.
Since Bengal cats are so expensive, they are a popular target of thieves.
Also, you never know when your Bengal
may find something to distract them, causing them to run off. To prevent theft or a lost kitty, keep your Bengal indoors.
~ Never Look For Bargains
With the large price tag, you may be tempted to look for cheaper breeders. Don't! Would you try to adopt an infant from a discount adoption agency? If it sounds too good to be true, something is wrong.
Carefully research the breeder before your purchase. The breeder should have no problem with you visiting their home and pair of Bengals they use for breeding. Never try to cut costs when purchasing from a breeder.
Bengal cats can make wonderful house cats. As with any cat, be prepared to fit your lifestyle to your cat's personality and not the other way around. Cats, even Bengal
cats, can never truly be owned. In their eyes, we should be humbled and honored they choose to share our homes.
