Concerned about a recession? Losing customers? Trying to grow your customer base? Well, it's time to go back to the basics. Don't be afraid, just think like your forefathers. How did they "get the word out?" Have you tried large posters? Fliers? Go to your local printing shop and price poster sizes. Most of them will even help you create a possible design for your advertisement, otherwise you can create the graphics at home and bring your flash drive and let them handle the rest. The home-based computer is the greatest tool at your disposal at a time like this. Come up with a flashy and easy to read flier, complete with addresses and phone numbers. There is plenty of cheap software that could be had to help with that as well in order to make your advertisement easier to create. Once finished, create your flier out of typical sheets of paper, print on both sides and make sure there is a place to crease in the center for easy folding and reading. A stapler and loads of rubber bands and suddenly you and your friends or co-workers can go door-to-door hanging your low-cost advertising all over the city.
Don't be afraid to turn your car, van, suv, or truck into a portable advertising device as well. You can create door sized magnets to fit onto your vehicle with similar information as that which you may have put on your new fliers. If not magnets, double-sided tape could be used to substitute, just be sure to find something with a low adhesive in order to protect your paint.
Even given the current hard times, there are always great, low-cost ways to increase your advertising, so don't be afraid, get creative!
