Why Obama's decision to overturn the Mexico City Policy is unpopular

The Mexico City Policy means that the U.S. government won't provide funding for overseas family planning agencies and clinics that offer abortion-related services. Even if private groups within the United States want to help foreign family planning agencies; the Mexico City Policy would prohibit this as well. United States taxpayers wouldn't be funding foreign abortions.

''The, dubbed the ''Global Gag Rule'' by abortion rights groups, was introduced by the administration of Ronald Reagan in 1984 in Mexico City, and was instituted that year. It was then overturned by President Bill Clinton in 1993 and restored by George W. Bush at the beginning of his office in 2001.'' (From www.abcnews.go.com/print?id=67 16958

President Obama's decision to overturn the Mexico City Policy is extremely unpopular with conservative Republicans within the U.S. Congress and right-to-life groups that help fund these candidates. The Catholic Church on a worldwide scale is unalterably opposed to abortion anywhere in the world as well as dispensing contraceptives of any type.

The following is a quote from Douglas Johnson who is the legislative director of the National Right to Life Committee: ''President not long ago told the American people that he would support policies to reduce abortions, but today he is effectively guaranteeing more abortions by funding groups that promote abortion as a method of population control.'' (From www.abcnews.go.com/print?id=67 15766

Many poor African people oppose President Obama overturning the Mexico City Policy. ''According research by the Steadman Group conducted last month, the overwhelming majority of Kenyans are pro-life.'' (From www.blogger.com/email-post.g?b logID=9673280&postID=86709 87887267092819

Abortion kills more brown and black-skinned babies than whites. The funding will go primarily to African nations where black-skinned children are prevalent. Abortion has reduced the black population on a global scale by 25 percent since 1973.

A black baby is three times more likely than a white baby to be aborted. Abortion kills more black children than twice the number of deaths from AIDS, violence, accidents, cancer and heart disease combined.

Abortion is regarded by many people as murder or genocide. Overturning the Mexico City Policy supports using abortion as a form of birth control. American taxpayers who oppose funding domestic abortions are angry with Obama for promoting abortions in foreign countries. These people believe that life begins at conception and ends at a person's natural death. Nothing should alter nature in any way. These people are also opposed to any type of contraceptive usage. Mormons oppose this as well as many evangelical Protestant religious groups.

Some people believe that such groups as Planned Parenthood are getting rich over performing abortions in foreign countries. These reasons are why President Obama's decision to overturn the Mexico City Policy is unpopular.
