You've picked out your new pooch and now you have another decision on your hands! What will you name the dog? If you have kids they're sure to have plenty of ideas but how will you choose?

People seem to be leaning toward human names for their dogs. In fact, in the listing below of the most popular dog names you will notice that trend. It seems people are moving away from naming their dogs "dog names" like Rover and Fido. The dog's place in the family unit has grown at a pace where many consider their dogs like family members even including them in Christmas cards and their family photographs.

Popular Dog Names

Male: Max, Jake, Buddy, Charlie, Harley, Bailey, Rocky, Jack, Cody, Buster.

Female: Bella, Molly, Lucy, Maggie, Daisy, Sophie, Chloe, Sadie, Bailey, Lola.

But what if you wanted something more unique for your dog? Instead of naming your black dog Shadow try Cinder or Noir. Would you prefer a small dog named Brutus or a big dog named Tiny? Let your imagination run wild! Have a favorite actor or actress or maybe a character from a book or movie? How about your favorite football player or baseball player? First name or last name it really doesn't matter! Anything is fair game in naming your new dog and you thought you couldn't think of anything good! One thing to remember is that dogs learn their names easier if they are a short one or two syllable name. Also, try not giving your dog an embarrassing name even though it may be funny or cute the novelty wears off fast.

Some owners just wait and see what their dog is really like. Is she sweet like Sugar? Did you get yourself a playful pup that may be a bit Spunky? Waiting to learn the personality of the dog may make it a tad easier to find your new pet a name that is appropriate. The Internet has many websites specifically geared for naming dogs which may come in handy if you still feel the need to use it.

If you still can't decide on a name for your new dog don't fret! Relax, sit back and watch him play and just be a dog. A name will come with time and he will love you no less for waiting for the right one to come along.
