Dog names: Choosing the right dog name

Choosing the Right Dog Name

A name is a distinctive and permanent brand one wears with pride. Responsible new and prospective dog owners spend a great deal of time researching in order to determine the perfect dog breed for their lifestyle. Whether you are preparing for a new puppy or adopting an adult dog, there are many factors to consider when choosing the ideal name for your family's new addition.

Tips to consider when choosing a dog name

Dogs comply best with brief orders so keep it simple. Stick to one or two syllable dog names to grasp your dog's immediate attention.

You will end up using your dog's name at least 35,000 times in its lifetime so make sure the name you choose is comfortable for both you and your dog.

If you decide on a name and it does not feel natural rolling off the tongue, or your dog does not seem to respond, do not panic. On average, it takes one month for dogs to learn their names, depending on the frequency in which their name is called. This allows you a brief window to select a more fitting dog name.

Steer clear of family names. Family members might be offended if they share a name with your dog. If you are changing an adult dog's name you have adopted, try staying with a similar sounding dog name. If the dog's original name was Rover, an appropriate name might be Clover.

Male dogs should possess strong names, reflective of their loyalty and playfulness. Female dog names may be more endearing, but keep in mind; female dogs are very dignified and grow more reserved with age.

Generate Ideas for Unique Dog Names Don't want your dog to have a popular label? Brainstorm using the following guidelines to create your unique dog name.

Research the history of the breed. Discovering the origin and developing an understanding of your dog's nature will help you select a suitable name.

Determine your dog's classification. There are several categories dogs fall under such as working, terrier, sporting, and hound. Each group was bred for a specific purpose and tends to behave accordingly.

Recognize your dog's distinguishing characteristics. Look for distinctive markings or behaviors that separate your dog from their sisters and brothers. What is your dog's stature, demeanor, and temperament?

Consider your lifestyle. Will your dog be accompanying you on your morning jog or riding shotgun, decked out in a matching sweater and diamond studded collar?

Consider the circumstances and the reason you decided to become a dog owner. When was your puppy born? What events surrounded your anticipation and subsequent arrival of your puppy?

Remember, you dog's name is a reflection of not only your dog, but yourself. Positive reinforcement and loads of attention will ensure your puppy responds quickly to whatever name you choose.
