How to make a good income working at home

Created on: February 19, 2009

Working at home is a goal that lots of people have begun aspiring too now with the rising costs and a need to feel more secure in their jobs. The idea of working at home is an enticing one but there are those that are afraid they won't be able to pay the bills while working at home. So just how do you make a good living working at home?

The first step is to decide that you're going to make a good living working at home. Then you must decide what you are going to do. Making a living working at home has obstacles that aren't there when you work outside of the home. Distractions you don't have in the traditional office make working from home challenging, these must be dealt with.

Children will want your attention when they aren't in school. Scheduling your day around them will make achieving a decent income at home easier. Working in the mornings before they get up to get the day started, then working in the evenings after they go to bed and while they are outside playing in the back yard will help to keep you on track; when they return to school you can put in a full eight hour day to earn your living. There may be the occasional all night session to catch up at first because you're learning to find your balance.

Sometimes the rates for working at home especially when you write are less than a traditional job when you get paid by the article. You have to learn to write as quickly and accurately as possible. Do you need a voice recognition program to type as you speak? Most of us talk faster than we can type whether we realize it or not and a voice recognition program can keep up better than our fingers can. Utilizing one of these programs can triple your production which will raise your hourly rate automatically.

Freelancing means that you can work for whomever you like as long as they like your work. Finding more than one source to write for and making submissions to magazines will help to boost writing income. When submissions are made online and your name is attached to them make sure you write quality and that you link to your articles from other sites to boost your exposure.

There are freelance writing sites that allow you to bid on projects; limiting bids to projects that you are sure you can complete will ensure your clients are happy. After a while you will have built up a client base that keeps returning to you for articles. Repeat business means a study income and there's nothing that says you can't pick up side projects. Be sure that you're prepared to work hard from the start to build and maintain a client base.
