Learning to cope on minimal wages

by Brian Lamacraft

Created on: February 19, 2009

I have learned to live on minimal wages for most of my life. I have used several strategies to help myself cope with some very difficult times and have suggestions for others in the same position.

Remain Positive

One strategy that I have used during tough times on low wages is to remain positive. This requires some soul searching and looking inwards at yourself. You are worth more as a person then what is in your wallet. We need money to live, but we don't need it to enjoy life. Do something special for yourself if you feel depressed. Go for a walk, watch a sunset, or open a door for somebody. Believe in yourself, your abilities and what you have to give. If you are positive you will attract other people and new job opportunities may develop for you.

Budget Expenses

When living on low wages it is extremely important to budget your expenses and watch every penny you spend. Try to pay your bills on time and avoid late payments and interest charges. Lower your debts if you can. Make a list of all your expenses and try to live within that budget. Don't make large purchases you can't afford, even if it is tempting.

Buy On Sale

Try to buy on sale as much as you can. You can lower your food bill substantially when you use sale flyers and coupons. Shop different stores such as discount, farmers market, and dollar stores for food items. Clothes and other items can be found at economy shops, or places like Wal-Mart. If you like designer clothes buy these on sale as they are very expensive. Compare your prices before you buy anything. Consult your budget and make sure you are staying within the limits of it.

Walking and Transit

If you live close to work or it is near a bus route considering walking or taking transit. Buying and maintaining a car on low wages can be very difficult. You can be left broke if your car breaks down and needs repairs unless you have a friend who is a mechanic or you do it yourself. Transit can save you a lot of money if you can take advantage of it where you work.

Impulse Buying

On low wages you may get frustrated and have the urge to buy something to make yourself feel better. You need to avoid this temptation. If you want something put some money aside and buy it when you can afford it. Take lunches and drinks to work so your not tempted to eat out during lunch. Take snacks with you to have during the day and stay away from vending machines.

Surround Yourself With Loved Ones

A good friend, parent or partner can help you cope during these tough times you are facing. Talk to them about your feelings. Don't turn to self abuse such as drugs or alcohol as this will make your situation worse. Seek help if you need it.

Living on low wages can be difficult and hard on you emotionally. You can cope with a positive attitude and strict attention to your daily expenses.
