If you have a gifted child, accept my congratulations: you can even go ahead and claim that the child inherited your genes. Yeah! Why not?
If your gifted child loves to read then, it's all good. A child that loves reading is just what every parent would love to have.
Now then, if your problem is just a matter of picking books your gifted child will appreciate, then you have no problem at all.
The first step, of course, is to discuss books with your child. This will give you an inkling into what the child considers interesting. Why is this important? Well, you cannot force your own taste on the child. He or she is gifted, remember? So, naturally, your child may have a mind of his own when it comes to picking books.
Again, the gender of the child in question is also a factor here. It is a fact that boys have a different taste in books from girls. Therefore, don't assume that books have no gender. Boys will naturally tend to love adventure stories while girls will prefer books that have a more romantic content.
In addition, you would need to do some voracious reading yourself. Sample books for children and then you try to put on your gifted child cap'. The books that you appreciate are likely to be appreciated by your gifted child too. After all, he or she is your child.
You can also discuss children's books with your neighborhood bookseller. Book dealers seem to have a lot of insight on what children will like or dislike when it comes to books.
If you have the time, watch movies or listen to audios that have books as well. If it sounds good on audio or looks good in a movie, chances are the book will be even better.
You can also try some more practical methods to get books your gifted child will appreciate. You may, for instance, ask an English Language or Literature Teacher to give you a list. However, this list must not include textbooks. Remember this, your child is reading for pleasure not studying for an examination.
Finally, you can buy popular but well-written books for your gifted child in accordance with his or her age. J.K. Rowling, for instance, is a firm favorite any day. So are adventure stories and simplified stories of historical figures.
So, as you can clearly see, picking books your gifted child will appreciate is not an uphill task. It is something any parent can do. And, in view of the obvious benefits of reading, you ought to pick books for your child with pleasure and a sense of pride.
