Reversal of time and how white America is treated in the 21st century
The topic of the conversation was Black History Month. I had contributed to the conversation by pointing out that February was a very busy month for many themes: Fire Safety Month, National Heart Health Month, National Bird Feeding Month, and of course Black History Month. The list is huge for National * Month in February, and if you want to see the entire list, I encourage you to go to: http://www.brownielocks.com/february.html for more information!
Anyway, a good friend asked rather pointedly why there wasn't a National White History Month, in my opinion, this question should have been quite obvious, "White History is just history", I said. To that, of course came the even more obvious, "Why is there a difference?"
The moment came upon the group of those gathered where a hush fell over everyone while each person looked inwards in contemplation. No one really had an answer for that question, and I daresay there really isn't one that is likely to satisfy me out there anywhere. The argument has been made quite publicly that instead of just plain old Americans, we have to differentiate everyone by Nationality that is to say, put that persons former Nationality in front of the word American. I strongly disagree with this thinking.
Not only do I find this offensive to all natural-born American citizens, but to those that have chosen America as their adopted home.
In addition, it can be quite confusing to many "European-Americans" that when a person is of America, that is actually born here, why should they feel the compulsion to differentiate themselves at all? I realize of course that their needs to be a certain amount of tact involved when addressing one of a different race so as not to offend, however I do not understand why it should be offensive coming out of the mouth of one race and not another. Everyone knows what I mean; if an African-American calls another of his or her race Black that is perfectly acceptable. Let whitey do it however and heads will roll!
One of my favorite actors, Morgan Freeman agrees that there should not be any type of racial defining in America.
"Freeman has publicly criticized the celebration of Black History Month and does not participate in any related events, saying, "I don't want a black history month. Black history is American history." He says the only way to end racism is to stop talking about it, and he notes that there is no "white history month". Freeman once
