As you enter the through the wooden gates, and follow along the dirt road, a whole new world is laid out before you. There are women in bonnets and long dresses churning butter, cooking in large pots over an open fire and making candles. Men are milking cows and chopping wood with axes. They retreat to small wooden cottages and speak in a strange version of the English that we are familiar with. No you have not been transported through time; this is the English village at Plimouth Plantation!
Plimouth Plantation has created an amazing replica of what Plimouth resembled when the original Pilgrims settled. Based on the original settlement just a few years after the Mayflower landed, the plantation resembles to a dramatic effect of what was originally there. From the skillfully crafted houses, gardens, and livestock; a visitor is able to embrace the lifestyle of those who walked before us. If the setting is not enough, then the actors whom remain in character of the typical 1627 villagers is sure to grasp your attention. As you walk through the village, the role players draw you into their world. You can interact with them, asking questions and engaging in typical 1627 conversations is encouraged and you are sure to leave with a renowned sense of knowledge of the period.
A typical visit to the English Village takes about two hours. It is self guided so you may take full advantage of the role players and interact with the pilgrims'. Enter into their homes', gardens, and truly embrace their way of life. The colonists are truly amazing actors, and remain in full character your entire visit acknowledging nothing after the year 1627. They enjoy sharing their stories, and teaching you about their lifestyle.
The village remains open through most weather conditions. It is important to dress according to the weather as this is an outdoor activity. The colonists will acknowledge that weather, and adjust their activities accordingly.
Aside from the English Village, there are many other sights to enjoy at Plimouth Plantation. There is a visitor's center, which includes many one of a kind souvenirs to remember your visit. Special exhibits which include actual artifacts are on display. There is also a Wampanoag home site display. Here you learn about the Native Americans that lived here even before the colonists settled.
Plimouth Plantation has so much to offer educationally, and presents it in a fun a interesting method. They provide an exciting experience which directly involves you and entices your interest. Educational programs are available onsite, and the town of Plymouth provides lots of entertainment, and dining opportunities.
