Alice:One In A Million
I met her about seven or eight years ago when I applied for a job at the bar she owned. I was looking to make a little extra cash in order to move out of my mother's house but ended up with so much more than money. Alice is what I had always been taught a true southern belle was suppose to be. She wasn't afraid to get her hands a little dirty. Many times when we were slammed with customers she would roll up her sleeves and help. Whether it was by washing dishes, helping to bus tables, or even taking a drink order or two. When we were slow she would walk around checking on customers. She would listen with an honest interest as they would tell her about their children, their jobs, and sometimes even their woes in life.
She has a caring heart. She gives without any thought to her on needs.Every year she slaves away in the kitchen as well as talking to other business owners in order to pull off a fundraiser to help a local children's home. She donates her time, her profits and if the set goal isn't met Alice then donates the diffence. Then she goes with everyone to watch these children enjoy the fruits of her hard work.
When those she loves are sick she brings food to both the one sick as well as their family. She offers comfort and does whatever is needed to make their lives better. When I was expecting my son she threw a baby shower like no other. She had this bar of hers covered in tiny baby booties and blue streamers.Set out a buffet for all the guest. She even got everyone to load up her truck with all the baby gear that was given.
She follows the old belief in life that warm food and a friendly shoulder is the best way to cope with the problems life might to choose to lay on one's shoulders. If someone comes into her bar down on their luck she is quick to offer them food.Sometimes she gives them a chance to earn a little money and even helps them find a better way to overcome their troubles.
To me she is the example of what eveyone should be.The world would be such a better place to life in if we all would practice living life as she has.Too often we treat the kindness of people like Alice's as a sign of weakness.A fool who deserves to be taken advantage of. It's rare to meet someone who is so pure of heart. Someone who gives of their self just out of the joy of giving and nothing more. I doubt I ever meet another person quite like her. The way she encourages others in a time when so many seem to get off on bringiing others down to make themselves feel better is aamazing.I know that God has a special place for her in heaven. To me she is one in a million.
