I lost in my feet. My favorite slippers were among the few casualties of my new regimen. The greatest relief, however, was no longer experiencing my usual hunger pangs. Sure, I felt hungry at times, but it was only the merest shadow compared to what I normally went through.
After nine months on the Atkins Diet, I've lost 30 pounds. My goal is to lose 30 more. Although I'm not making all of the progress I'd hoped for, my success has been very meaningful. No longer do the waistbands of my trousers feel like chainsaw blades. I sleep better and I feel more energetic. And with no howling hunger pangs harassing me through the day, I'm calmer and less stressed at work. I'm probably also more productive.
My staple foods have become: almonds mixed with pistachios for breakfast; salad with chunks of turkey burger for lunch; vegetables and humus, or turkey burgers for dinner. I've strayed with my intake of peanut butter and have struggled with the amount of cheese and red meat I eat, but overall I have remained on the diet, and I have kept off the weight I've lost. For the first three months, I ate absolutely no sweets. But around Christmas time, the odd chocolate bar began creeping into my daily intake.
A cross-the-board "magic bullet", cure-all or panacea for North America's weight problem doesn't exist. I don't pretend that the Atkins Diet is for everyone. I do know, however, that it has changed my life in a number of tangible, positive ways.
