Short stories: The stockbroker

by Monique Aiken

Created on: February 18, 2009

Ray Janice Taylor had three weeks to go before she finished her class. She was looking forward to becoming the first stockbroker in her family. R.J. began to notice the closer she moved toward graduation the harder the course became. She received her quiz back from instructor Barnes. She looked at the paper with a slight smirk on her face. "Ms. Taylor you did very well on your quiz." said Dr. Barnes. She had passed with a B-. "Are you serious Dr. Barnes." said R.J. "Yes" replied Dr. Barnes."Your score was the highest in my class consider yourself fortunate Ms.Taylor." "Wow!" exclaimed R.J. Ms. Taylor as you are well aware of, there are only three more weeks left in this course and then you will go on to graduate. There is an internship slot available at the Stockbroker Firm. I think that you would be an excellent candidate for this position. It would be during the morning hours and I would really love to recommend you." said Dr. Barnes. I have never heard of that company Dr. Barnes." said R.J. "It is a small company but I know you will do well." said Dr.Barnes. "This will give you some hands on experience in the field and you will be able to actually see what will be required of you." said Dr. Barnes. "A real stockbroker." said R.J. "Almost" said Dr. Barnes. You will be observing and making some suggestions to your trainer on how you would handle certain situations." said Dr. Barnes. "Yes, Dr. Barnes that would be great." said R.J. "You will start tomorrow morning." said Dr. Barnes.

R.J. arrived downtown early. She reported to Karen Bright. R.J and Karen watched as the bell rang. The price of wheat started dropping immediately. "Do we buy more or sell? asked R.J. "You are suppose to be giving me your opinion." said Karen. "Oh yea, right." said R.J. "Let us just wait right here for a minute." said Karen. R.J watched in horror as the price kept dropping. It went down to a $1.74 a share. Karen said,"OK it is time to buy." "Karen then began to focus her attention on oranges they started out at $10.04 a share and began to rise as high as $15.94. They looked back at the wheat as the shares continued to rise. "You made a wise decision," said R.J. "Yes, it is all in knowing your product and doing your homework." said Karen.

By the end of the morning R.J was a wreck. R.J looked at Karen and said," I do not think I can do this." "Yes you can Ray Janice. It comes with a lot of studying and knowing the product and even at that sometimes I miss the mark, but you will be fine."
