Do ferrets make good pets?

Ferrets can be wonderful pets, but they all have their own personalities just as other pets. From my own experience, female ferrets seem to be more compatible with other pets and people. Our own little ferret, "Farah", was one of the most awesome little pets we ever shared our home with. She got along well with our dog, cat, and our children. Even though she thought she was the head of the house sometimes, she still was willing to share her space. If you plan on purchasing a ferret as a pet, make sure you know all there is to know about taking care of one. Females and males are very different. So, when you decide that a ferret is the pet for you, purchase all the information you can find on the little addition before you bring one home.

Farah was a happy ferret during her short lifetime, but if we had known more about her, we could have shared many more years with her. Female ferrets must either mate or be spayed. It cost our ferret's life because we were not educated, and neither was the pet store where we purchased the ferret. Make sure that you understand the dangers of not spaying a female ferret. She will die. When our little female ferret began getting sick, we had no idea what was wrong with her. She began to swell around her private area. We thought she had injured herself at first, but then we decided we needed to take her to the vet. She was only sick for a couple of days and still the vet was unable to save her. Infection took her life.

Ferrets are wonderful, especially females, but always make sure you know what type of care is needed before purchasing one. Farah was a very sweet pet for the months that we had her. She played well with the dog and cat. She loved playing all through the house and we had baby-proofed it because I was pregnant, so it was very safe for her, as well. She could run all over and play hide-and-seek with us and the dog and we never feared her being injured. She loved to nestle inside the lining of the box springs of our spare bed. We would see this little lump hanging from the bottom and know exactly where she decided to hide. Usually she would fall asleep before the game was over.

Ferrets are good with families and pets as long as you supervise both. Children tend to get rough and so do other animals. Also, the ferret can sometimes cause harm to other animals, as well. Be sure you train all your pets to get along. Watch them when they play to be sure they are not harming each other. The same goes with children. Teach them
