Before we create a web page, it is vitally important that we consider why we wish to do so and what we hope to achieve from it. We may simply wish to post to it in the form of a blog, we may wish to create a web page about ourselves, we may wish to create a web page about our hobby or business, or we may simply wish to create a web page to make money! The answers which we come up with to these questions will determine which type of blog or site we should be creating.
There can of course be no type of web page which would cover every conceivable combination of answers to the question we will be asking ourselves in the context of the previous paragraph, but I will give you an example of a type of web page which would be more than suitable for the majority of situations in which we may find ourselves.
Squidoo is the brainchild of legendary blogger, Seth Godin. It allows anyone to build a page on the web - called a lens - on virtually any subject of their choosing. There are currently more than three-quarters of a million lenses on Squidoo of almost every type imaginable. Some promote people, some promote businesses, some provide information on very specific topics and some are clearly focused on selling products relating to very specific topics. The good thing in all these instances is that Squidoo provides us with a wide range of tools for creating our page and making it as professional and successful as possible.
The one piece of advice I would give before starting a lens on Squidoo is to make sure you are creating it on a very specific topic. If your subject is very general, split it in to ten sub-categories and create a lens on each. There are no limits to the number of lenses you can create on Squidoo and ten focused lenses will be a lot more than ten times as successful as one vague one.
When you go to the site, you will be guided very carefully through the process of creating your first lens. Don't worry about this too much as anything you create can be very easily changed later - except the URL for your lens. Give this a bit of thought and don't rush in to it. Remember that it should be as focused upon the subject of your lens as you can make it. Add content as prompted by the system and soon you will have your first lens up and running. Be warned, though, that it may be up and running but it is far from finished!
It is now advisable to browse Squidoo and to familiarise yourself with the site and what it offers. Read some of the wonderfully instructive lenses in the "How to Squidoo" section which is ideal for beginners. Look at all the different tools there are available for improving your lens and for selling products upon it for commissions. Take the time to do all of this and more and the process will stand you in good stead and pay off in the long run.
When you have familiarised yourself with Squidoo and got that first lens beginning to look like the way you want it, start over again and make another lens on another subject. Squidoo is addictive - I hope you will soon find that our for yourself.
