Science fiction films are rarely known for their romance appeal. More often than not they are known and associated with an alternate reality, an alien or outer space theme, or for current and future speculations of science or technology. One of the most popular Sci-Fi series of all time is the Matrix trilogy. The Matrix series is based on the premise that the world that humans know is merely a simulated reality created by the machines in order to subdue the human population and use their bodies as an energy source. Sound far fetched? many of the best Sci-Fi stories are.
One particular difference in the Matrix from other stories of the genre, is the fact that in its simplest form, the Matrix can be perceived as a love story between 2 of its title characters, Neo and Trinity. Trinity is one of a group of people who have been "rescued" from the matrix and lives in an actual reality. Along with her crew and its leader, Morpheus, they save Neo from the machine generated world because they believe Neo is "the one". The one is considered in the story to be the only person who can save mankind from the machines.
In short, Neo grows to love Trinity, and a deep bond is formed between the two which actually becomes the essence of the story. In the original Matrix film, a kiss from Trinity brings Neo back to life and he discovers at that moment that he is indeed "the one". Their love is obvious through watching the entire trilogy, especially in the Matrix reloaded when Neo saves trinity in the end by pulling a bullet out of her body and using his hands to start her heart again after it stops beating.
Unfortunately in the end, Neo is to choose between saving all of mankind, and saving trinity. Choosing to save trinity continued a war with the machines that led to the Matrix revolutions, the 3rd and final film in the trilogy. In this film, neo is blinded by saving trinity from the evil Agent Smith, Neo's arch enemy in the series. Trinity must then fly Neo to the Machine city in order to stop the way. Being attacked while landing, Trinity is killed when parts of the hovercraft she is piloting penetrate her skin. She declares the strong feelings she has for Neo as she lay dying, and asks him for one last kiss. Neo is crushed by the loss of his one true love, and continues on.
In the end, Neo defeats smith, and in turn defeats himself. The war with the machines is over and Neo's fate is never revealed on screen. The love Neo and trinity share during the 3 blockbuster films will go down in history as one of the greatest love stories of all time, and certainly the greatest in the science fiction genre. Many people believe, based on religion and the story of the Matrix, that Neo and Trinity end up together in the end, both becoming a part of the Matrix.
