Poetry: Lies

by Annette Bromley

CAUGHT IN OUR OWN WEB OF DECEPTION

Words shouted in anger

while shaking a finger at the rest;

small groups banding together

shouting they are right, they know best,

supreme human beings

stirring up a hornet nest...

Each crowd more right than the other,

each one for their special cause

making us all segmented,

we're running helter-skelter

with no one taking time to pause,

to look at the whole picture,

each group blaming the other

until it is father against son,

brother against brother,

sister against sister

and daughter against mother;

nation against nation,

doctrines against church

with no one taking time to see

how much this really hurts

or to assess all of the damage

that has been already done

by twisting, binding all we have

in the tangled web we've spun

where only fear, confusion reigns;

who, what do we believe,

trust gone; by our own lies

we are continually deceived

and we shut our eyes and shut our ears

to the lessons of history.

It is written. We've been clearly warned

yet we ignore the call...

our life, our hope is found in God.

The writing is on the wall

yet few will read or understand

or make any connection,

too deceived by lust and greed

and the web of our own deception.
