The Last Drop is a pub on Edinburgh's historic Grassmarket, right in the very centre of Edinburgh's Old Town. The Grassmarket was at one time the scene of Edinburgh's public executions, where a succession of people who had been convicted of a variety of crimes were hanged on the gallows. Hence the reason for the name of the pub, The Last Drop.
There is an Old Worldly feel to The Last Drop. Wooden rafters, carefully subdued lighting, a magnificent mural depicting The Grassmarket the way it was centuries ago - all these things contribute to this quite deliberate effect.
The bar in The Last Drop is facing you as you go in the front door. There is seating to your left as you enter the pub but also considerably more around the corner beyond the bar which is not immediately visible upon entering. Stools at the bar itself are also provided for those who choose the more traditional method of patronising a pub.
The bar offers a wide variety of beers, lagers, stouts and ciders. It also sells wines and a variety of spirits. Naturally, of course, it offers a range of Single Malt Whiskies and actually provides a tasting list to thirteen of the very best for those not quite in the know.
Food is served in The Last Drop seven days a week up until nine pm. There is an extensive menu to choose from of quality fayre which is all prepared fresh on the premises wherever possible. Such as the haggis is obtained from a respected local butcher.
The food is all prepared in as healthy a fashion as possible and a deep fat frier is not something which you would find in The Last Drop's kitchen.
As mentioned, there is a very comprehensive menu and selection of food from which to choose but this article could never be complete without mention of The Last Drop's Steak and Guinness Pie.
This pie is made to a secret recipe on the premises and is served with a selection of fresh vegetable. I first tried this pie more than twenty years ago and have eaten it on countless occasions sense, enjoying it every bit as much on each of them.
T-shirts are sold in The Last Drop, depicting a gallows complete with rope and the name of the pub for those seeking a somewhat sinister memento of their visit.
The Last Drop is a very popular pub and can get extremely busy, particularly on weekend evenings. If you are in the area of Edinburgh's Old Town, however, I cannot recommend The Last Drop highly enough for either a great lunch or even a quick and relaxing drink.
