The rain that started as just a shower turned into a heavy downpour outside of Maria's restaurant. Rain pounded passing cars and trucks as the man ran in. Shaking off his jacket, you could tell he wasn't too happy as he muttered expletives under his breath.
"How ya doin' Merv?" one of the waitresses asks freshening up a customers cup with hot coffee.
"How the hell you think Amy," he said looking up at her smiling forcefully. "I haven't seen rain like that, since, well.. ever," he says pulling out a counter seat. A young couple run in trying to cover each others heads laughing. "Glad someone's enjoying it," he says as Maria puts a cup in front of him and fills it with coffee.
"Pipe down," she says playfully.
"Bout time you gave me something hot an wet that I can use my lips with," he says smiling up at her.
"Keep talking like that drowned rat, and you'll leave just as quickly as you came. Have a seat anywhere folks," she says looking up to the couple. They laugh making their way to a booth. There really aren't that many people in the restaurant. Just a few regulars shoveling in greasy spoon swill. Suddenly, Maria looks up to see a man in a lab coat walking slowly toward the restaurant. Her look has Merv turn around to see what she's looking at weirdly. Him standing up has the young couple look out to see this man shambling toward the restaurant looking visibly shaken.
"He doesn't look too good," the young girl says.
"Maybe he needs help," the young man says going to stand up. His girl grabs him by the hand and pulls him to his seat.
"I don't like this Larry," she says looking at him, then outside at the man.
"If he's hurt, we have to help him," he says kissing her hand. "I'll be alright." He goes to the door and looks back at Maria and Merv at the counter. "Do you have any extra towels," he asks.
"Sure do hon," Maria says. He breathes out heavy and runs out to the man who is beyond wet. His eyes stare forward almost life less as Larry runs to him.
"Excuse me sir, are you all right," the young man asks reaching the man what looks like a doctor. "Come on, let's hurry and get you in."
"Dead.." the doctor says like in a trance, "but not dead." Larry puts his arm around him and notices how cold his hands are. The badge on his chest reads: Doctor William Meacham, and below it: Biochemical Unit.
"We'll get you inside Doc," he says helping him quickly make it to the front door. They come through drenched. "Man," Larry says laughing like a school kid, "I'm soaked!"
"I
