How to turn your passion for classic cars into a business

A love of classic cars can be an expensive hobby, yet some people are able to make a business of their passion. Let's discuss a few ways in which this can be done.

The most obvious, and perhaps the most risky and expensive field to enter, is to become a dealer in classic cars. Just buy low and sell high, perhaps with a little cosmetic makeover in between. Unfortunately that's easier to say than to do. First, there's the challenge of finding the right cars and negotiating a price that gives a reasonable profit. Then you need to find buyers willing to pay your inflated price. Lastly, there are premises, which can be difficult to find and insure.

So becoming a dealer, while not impossible, may not be the easiest way to earn a living from classic cars.

Here are some other options:

If you own a classic, especially if it's a particularly gorgeous convertible, rent it out for weddings. If you're leery of having other people drive it, don appropriate headgear and become a chauffeur. That way you actually get paid for driving your pride and joy. You might even consider providing a high-end limo service to people seeking a more distinguished mode of transportation.

If your classic is rather more mundane, rent it out to movie companies. They are always looking for cars that are typical of a certain period and prefer a well-used appearance to something in show condition.

Another possibility, especially if you're not an owner yourself, is to become a photographer of classic cars. You'll need an artistic eye and a high quality camera, and admittedly, it's a very competitive field, but there is always demand from publishers of calendars and automotive websites.

Alternatively, how about providing a detailing service to owners of classics? This of course goes far beyond the normal wash and wax. Classic cars have their own peculiarities cleaning wheel spokes, for example and need a more caring touch. Busy collectors will gladly pay for the services of a professional who knows what he's doing.

Restoration can be a profitable field, but you will need premises and time. One option to consider if you have specialist skills like welding or painting, is to focus just on that aspect. Be sure to market your services in the appropriate publications and internet forums.

If you run your own classic you'll know that some replacement parts can be difficult to impossible to obtain. How about making your own, especially if you have a small machine shop, or can obtain the services of one? Once you have identified a particular niche a small web site will let you reach a global market.

Last, if you love researching makes and models, and are fascinated by the whole classic car market, consider getting into the appraisal business. Appraisers are the people who advise insurance companies on what it would take to replace a loved vehicle. As such, they're expected to have a detailed knowledge of both classic cars and their current values an ideal job for someone who loves the buzz of an auction.

In short, there are many ways to make money from a love of classic cars, not all of which need a great initial outlay. Perhaps this article has inspired you to investigate one of the many possibilities.
