How to choose a diamond for an engagement ring

Getting engaged? If you're like the majority of engaged couples, chances are you'll continue the tradition of wearing a diamond engagement ring. Because the "perfect ring" is largely a matter of personal choice, this is probably a decision you'll want to make jointly with your fianc. Understanding the 4C's - cut, clarity, color, and carat size - will help you choose the best quality diamond for your budget.

Cut is considered to be the most important of the 4 C's, because a well-cut diamond sparkles more than any other gem. Exact little planes called facets direct rays of light into the diamond. The light is then reflected outward, creating the diamond's fire and brilliance. Fire is the intensity of the rainbow of colors emanating from a diamond, and brilliance is the liveliness of a diamond. It is important to distinguish between the cut and the "shape" of the diamond.

Clarity is determined by the degree to which a diamond is free from natural inclusions or imperfections. Most diamonds contain some inclusions, visible only through a jeweler's loupe, the magnifying instrument professionals use to examine and evaluate gemstones.

Color in a diamond means the best color is no color, which allows the stone to cleanly reflect and refract light. Diamonds are rated for color on a letter scale beginning with D, which is perfectly colorless, to Z, the lowest color rating.

Carat refers to the weight of the diamond, not its size. There are 100 points in a carat. Therefore, a larger diamond of 50 points weighs 1/2 a carat. Larger diamonds of one carat or more are rare and of greater value per carat.

Where do you go to shop for your engagement or wedding rings? It is important to shop from a local jeweler who has been recommended for service, reliability, and merchandise selection. Established jewelers prize their good reputation and know you're making one of your most important purchases. Remember to ask questions about service and product guarantees.

Each diamond is unique, so it's important that the store give you a document describing all of its special qualities. A qualified retailer should give you a "plot chart" or diamond grading report, which includes a written evaluation (especially if the stone is over a carat) verifying the store's description of the stone. A good salesperson will explain each characteristic and how it adds to the total value of the ring, leaving you feeling confident about your purchase. Understanding what makes every diamond different ensures that your engagement ring will be a unique symbol of enduring quality and love.
