More than 7,000 years ago, Mount Mazama in southern Oregon erupted and collapsed on itself, creating the spectacular landscape of Crater Lake. Two-thousand foot cliffs surround a deep, clear blue lake with the forested Wizard Island at its center. Since 1902, when Crater Lake was added to the National Park system, the captivating landscapes have been popular with people from around the world.
There is a variety of options for lodging in and around Crater Lake. Choosing the right one depends on your personal preferences, the time of year, and how much money you want to spend. Here is an overview of the most popular places to stay.
Crater Lake Lodge
Construction on the lodge began way back in 1909, and it has housed guests to the park since 1915. The lodge is located in the Rim Village. 71 guest rooms provide adequate accommodation between May and October.Reservations are strongly recommended as there are only two options for lodging within the National Park, and the Crater Lake Lodge is by far the most popular because it is perched on the caldera overlooking the lake. There is an elegant restaurant located in the lodge.Pricing varies depending on whether your room has a view of the lake. Ground floor rooms start at $143 and lakeside lofts are up to $267 per night.
Mazama Village Cabins
The Mazama Village complex is about 7 miles south of Crater Lake. The motor inn has only 40 guest rooms, so be sure to make a reservation. Additionally, it is only open from June through September, so travelers visiting outside those dates will need to try other options. The simple accommodations include beds and private bathrooms with showers, but there is no air conditioning or television. The standard room rate is $122 per night for two people. For every additional person, add $9. You will not be charged the additional person fee for children under 12.
Mazama Village Campground
If you want to rough it in a tent or have and RV to stay in, the Mazama Village Campground is a perfect solution. There are 212 campsites, each can accommodate a 12x12 foot tent and an RV up to 50 feet long. The campground, like the cabins and lodge, is only open for a small portion of the year, from June to September. A portion of the sites are available for reservation, but if you don't have a reservation there are some sites set aside for "first-come-first-served" rental.
The campground allows a maximum of six people per campsite. A tent site is $19, an RV site is $22, an RV site with electricity is $25 per
