Historical determinism, as the philosopher William James might have said, presents a forced option to humanity on the concept of the approaching apocalypse. when and where it shall occur no no can be certain, yet the delusion of a soma-like rem sleep of life on the edge of the precipice of eternity affects us all. It becomes more evident as the limits to planetary population growth and human deleterious net effects on the global ecology make a physical probability of an Apocalypse evident. As Karl Maulden might have said 'What will you do, what will you do?
Humanity was a scruffy lot of homo sapiens full of lies and wicked ways into which the new inmates of the world social environment Adam and Eve were inserted being cast out of their place beyond the four space-time dimensions where time does not exist. They had become as little gods-perhaps real wise-guys, and were sent to toil for bread and have babies like the others condemned to the realm of original sin. I would think that interpolation occurred some time about 100,000 years ago. God is powerful.
Human economic and the will to power make the environment forever unstable. It compiles greed and power higher and higher such as the tower of Babel until God casts them down. It seem that Adam and Eve were the first Jews of the world and were intended to be an example to other people about how to relate to God rightly. The poor Jews themselves forgot too often how to do that and were chastised. Even in their renewed national Israel the Jews are surrounded by a sea of oil rich Arabs and Muslims led by a false prophet clamoring for their destruction, and so much for concern about an apocalypse when more pressing concerns arise such like getting people to blow themselves and others up for political profit.
The cold war era brought some of us to the awareness of the fragility of human existence and the potential evil of global thermonuclear war. China still is a belligerent with that issue as is North Korea-America hasn't perfected anti-ballistic missiles with neutron bomb warheads able to assure the destruction of opposition force ballistic missiles. The good old days of just plain nukes was a simpler and happier era. There was a foe out there of a global scale, there were some gentlemanly rules more or less and probably no one would launch anything anyway. Now there are no checks and balances on environmentally deleterious economic policies. The rage to consume is unrestrained and rationality has been jettisoned
