Great attractions of England

Britain is a country made up of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and is one of the world's most popular tourist destinations. Each major city boasts its own little world of history. London of course is home to Buckingham palace, the Queens main residence; the imperial war museum, HMS Belfast, Tower Bridge and so much more. Liverpool is famous for producing the Beatles; today you can go on your own Magical Mystery Tour or spend a Hard Days Night in the one of Liverpool's most famous Beatles themed hotels. Liverpool also recently won the bid for Capital of Culture 2008 and over the past few years has undergone a lot of renovation. Alternatively, if you were after somewhere to relax and go back to the Roman times, you could visit Bath with its historic hot springs and Royal crescent. Wherever you go in Britain, you will stumble upon beauty and history, it is impossible not to.

On a more personal level, I feel that you cannot visit Britain without a trip to York. The city which was founded by the Romans in the 1st century became a major military base, however when the Roman empire started to decline York was captured by the Saxons, who were then pushed out by the Vikings, who named the city Jorvik which was the basis for its modern name: York. After the Vikings, it was the turn of the Normans who won leadership of the city after the Battle of Hastings in 1066. York was once a centre for government and trading. Today however, the city echoes its history and a mixture of cultures can be seen within the city walls. No visit to York is complete without a walk through the Shambles; this is the old meat market of the city consisting of narrow streets with beautiful medieval structures. Today, you can buy all sorts on a walk through the Shambles, from trinkets to clothes. A visit to the York Minister is essential; it is the largest gothic church in England and is still used today. The Minister possesses beautiful stained glass windows which were removed during the first and second world wars so that they could be safely stored away from harm during the battles.

Moving further north, Durham is another stunning city well worth a visit. It is most famous for Durham Cathedral which dates back to the 11th century. From inside, the building manages to take to take your breath away. The cathedral is believed to be the most original and intact of the Anglo-Norman churches. The cathedral is the resting place for Bede the Venerable and St. Cuthbert. A stroll along the
