Chihuahuas: The Smallest Dog Breed
Chihuahuas are the smallest dog breed. Although there are many and varied theories regarding the Chihuahuas evolution most believe them to have originated in Mexico from the ancient Techichi and used in the Toltec civilization for religious purposes and as a companion from around the 9th century AD. The modern Chihuahua first become popular in the mid-1800's but the breed was not officially registered with the AKC until 1904.
The Chihuahua breed standard is a graceful, compact animal with a "saucy" expression and terrier like temperament. They come in two coats; smooth and long and can come in any color or marking. They can weigh no more than 6 pounds and have a slightly off square stance. They should have an "apple" like head with full round eyes. Their ears should be fully erect and their tail broad, flat and furry. The Chihuahua is an alert, confident and self-reliant breed and should exhibit these tendencies in their attitude.
Chihuahuas have become extremely popular but they also carry a reputation of being a yippy, nippy breed. Although the Chihuahua is adorable one should do their research and truly understand the breed prior to adopting one. A Chihuahua must be correctly socialized in order to become a pet that can be enjoyed. Chihuahuas are very clannish and tend to prefer their people to any other pet or person but with the right introduction Chihuahuas can accept and thrive in the presence of others.
Chihuahuas also have big personalities. They are convinced that they are top dog and no one is going to tell them differently. As an owner you must make sure your little pet understands you are boss so that you can control and protect them from harm.
Finally, as with any dog, house training is a must. Because of their small stature they may be slightly more difficult to train but with patience and understanding they will become a great member of the family.
There are countless resources to introduce a new owner to socializing and housebreaking but the most important thing when training a Chihuahua is consistency. You must take them out into public places and let them be a dog; meaning, do not carry them everywhere. When they show signs of dominance be sure to divert their attention; a small treat works wonders. Finally, when house training the most important step is to make it a routine, take them out at regular intervals, to the same spot and give them a couple minutes to go. If they go, praise them calmly. If they do not go within a couple minutes take them back to their crate and give them a minute in the crate, then go through the routine again. By doing this you will teach the dog what you expect and before you know it they will be asking to go out.
The Chihuahua is an awesome pet with unique and desirable features. They are easy to own and travel with. They are fun to play with and there is nothing more rewarding then cuddling up with your tiny friend, as they stare adoringly into your eyes and give you that one of a kind Chihuahua smile.
