How the US can be made safer from terrorist attacks

in a war with al Qaeda on mere threats to the U.S. and Israel, since it was actually the Taliban and not al Qaeda at all that committed the Act of Piracy (not Act of War as it was civilians and not a country's army) that was the original reason for our engagement in Afghanistan. That purpose has all but been forgotten due to an ill defined and unconstitutional war, creating another generation now of terrorists each and every day we are "over there."

VISA's and other such temporary visitation rights to this country should be thoroughly investigated, and denials made then to citizens from unfriendly countries. Protection of the U.S. citizens should be primary, not appeasement of foreign governments at the price of the lives of Americans. As it stands now, President Bush in his last 100 days in office, even in spite of the attacks of 9/11 and the British shoe bomber incident, signed a treaty and accord with the leaders of 34 nations granting the citizens from those nations VISA waivers, with merely 48 hour background checks that can be applied for online. It appears that while terrorizing this country with the threat of another terrorist attacks, the federal government is doing everything and anything possible to make such an attack not simply likely, but an actuality.

Country first does not mean we go looking for enemies or for wars for profit. 9/11 changed everything. Now what is needed is changing the politicians and citizenry to realize that although we formerly may have been a nation of immigrants, our immigration policies and lack of border security in the interest of commerce and travel are actually undermining and destroying our national sovereignty and subjecting the citizens to inside attacks. The next war will not come from without, it will come from within unless strict adherence to our Constitution and the performance of the federal government in it's basic duties and function is not remedied, and remedied fairly soon. It is now seven years post 9/11, and at this point there is simply no excuse for it.

The border state residents are now under attack from Mexico and the Mexican drug cartel wars that are spilling now into the U.S., so in the lack of performance of their duties, it has cost far more lives now than just simply those of 9/11....including the lives of those soldiers fighting a no win war at this point.

A country without secure borders is no country at all, and open to attack from both without and from within. What will it take the American people to realize that Washington is not performing it's primary function, and that "freedom" of travel need not end, yet we do need boundaries and protection in order to prosper both as a nation, and as a people, without the fear of outside or inside attack. The prospect of another 9/11 is ever present until Washington and the federal government perform it's fundamental duty to it's people.
