Dealing with short-term memory problems

Created on: February 17, 2009

Every once in awhile you might catch yourself forgetting something, whether it be someone's name, something you were supposed to do, or something you heard only five minutes ago. What you are experiencing is more common then you think, thousands of people experience short term memory loss everyday.

There are many things that can contribute to short term memory loss. To deal with the problem you must first discover why you are having the problem in the first place.

Here are a few of the most common reasons people will suffer from short term memory loss and ways to deal with them.

Forgetfulness

If you have always been forgetful, or are becoming so lately there are many things you can do to help your memory along the way. For example, if you have trouble remembering someone's name shortly after you have met them try to associate their name with something in your mind to help you remember. If you meet Bob and he has brown hair you might say to yourself, "Bob has Brown hair." Perhaps next time you see him an association like that will help you remember. Try associating their names with celebrities too, that always seems to help.

Another way to get through your short term memory loss due to forgetfulness is to be open and honest with people. If you forget someone's name, just tell them you are very forgetful, apologize and ask for their name again.

As a final resort for these short term problems use a notebook or notepad to help jog your memory. They even make digital recorders you can carry with you to help you remember lists, names, or errands you have to run that day. Just making the effort to improve your memory will help in the long run. Eventually you will start to remember your lists, errands, and names simply because you have made a conscious effort to do so.

Stress or Anxiety

If you have found yourself suffering short term memory loss during a period of time in which you have been very busy or stressed, you have no reason to be worried. When you have other things on your mind, remembering your grocery list, or son's soccer coach may seem pale in comparison to what you are going through. Don't beat yourself up over the little lapses in memory.

First off it is okay to tell people you have been under extreme stress and simply forgot. Just don't make a habit of it. The best way to avoid apologizing and forgetting anything is to be proactive. Make lists, leave notes, and always keep a calendar. The calender will make sure you do not forget important events, bills that
