Ways to calm down after an argument

Arguments are often heated, with each party potentially losing control over words and actions. When we are in a fight with our spouse or someone else, we often lash out with hurtful comments that we do mean, or say mean things that we do not really mean.

We also are likely to hear things we do not want to hear, some of which can cause us great pain. When in an argument, our emotions take over, often causing us to lose perspective and common sense.

When you get in a confrontation with someone, your best bet is to take some time to cool down from the exchange. With a bit of space, you may be able to better understand the causes of the argument, and your part in it.

Below are some ways you can calm down after an altercation, so that you can recollect your thoughts.

* Go for a walk.

One of the best ways to deal with heated emotions is to walk off some steam. Walking will physically remove you from the scene of the argument, and it will help you mentally by clearing the mind.

If you are really angry, you may want to quicken your pace to a jog. Cardiovascular exercise will also release endorphins, which are those feel-good chemicals that lift moods.

* Get some fresh air.

If you do not have time for a walk, just getting some fresh air will help. Step outside for a few minutes. Unroll your car window. Fresh air will do you wonders.

* Splash cold water on your face.

There is something about a splash of cold water that helps soothe and calm, especially when you have been crying.

* Have a strong drink.

A whiskey or bourbon drink can certainly calm the nerves of some people. If that is the effect that alcohol has on you, then you may want to indulge in a stiff one while you unwind from an argument.

* Journal, but do not send an email or letter.

Writing is a great tool. It helps us get certain emotions out, and we can sort through some things as we go through this process.

You may want to write a letter or email to the person you are upset with, just as a way to get some things down on paper. Be careful, though. You do not want to send anything you have written when upset. Hold onto what you write, and review it at a later date.

* Watch a funny movie.

Laughter is so good for you, and it will temporarily take your mind off of some of your problems. Funny movies can be particularly powerful when you are feeling uptight.

* Listen to your favorite music.

Music, particularly classical, can be very soothing. Sometimes when your emotions are high, you will benefit by simply lying down and listening to some music.

In conclusion, arguments are usually upsetting and hurtful. They tend to make you feel just awful. The first thing you need to do after a conflict is calm down. Try some of these tactics, and then you can think about resolving the problem.
