GPS reviews: Garmin StreetPilot

by Sherri Trevino

Created on: February 16, 2009

The Garmin Streetpilot C330 has been a Godsend for me. I am a Real Estate Agent, so my job is to show houses to my clients, all over the city.
I live in a very large city, and there are probably more places that I have NOT been to, than places that I HAVE been to. Prior to owning my Garmin Streetpilot C330, I had to plan my route and then map it out on Mapquest. It was extremely time consuming, not to mention that sometimes the Mapquest directions were not correct.

I did not know very much about navigational systems prior to owning this unit. I had seen some advertised on the shopping channel that were too expensive for me. For that reason, I thought I would never personally own one. Call me ignorant, but I also did not know whether or not there was a monthly cost to operate a GPS. We pay monthly for cell phones, satellite radio, and the Internet. So, at the time it made perfect sense to me that a GPS might be a product or device that would also require a monthly fee. I was wrong on both counts.

My husband bought the Garmin Streetpilot C330 for my Christmas present two years ago. He purchased it at Walmart for less than $200.
That is an exceptional price, in my opinion. And it completely defeated my notion that GPS
systems were too expensive to purchase.
This one is very affordable.

Of course, that is when I also learned that there is no monthly charge to operate the GPS device.
After the one time cost of purchasing the unit, no further costs are involved to operate it.

The Garmin Streetpilot C330 came with a suction mount cradle for mounting the unit on the windshield.
It also came with a charger that plugs into the cigarette lighter. When the internal battery gets low, you simply plug in the unit to recharge.

Learning to operate this GPS system was a snap. On the touch screen, you can select an address, or locations for food, lodging, and fuel. There is also a selection for "My Locations", which gives you the option of selecting home (which is preset), or any recent selections you have previously entered, or your "Favorite Locations", (which you can also present). In addition, you can search for shopping, recreation, entertainment, attractions, hospitals, airports, auto services and parking. You get all of this at the touch of the screen.

To enter your destination, you select "address". First you enter the state, then the city, then the house number, and lastly the street name. Then hit "GO" and you are on your way. It could not be simpler.
