Aging, it is a process that everyone dreads. But what if there were a simple way to delay the aging process? Would you be willing to try some inexpensive and healthy ideas that might just make you look and feel years younger?
First, let's take a look at some of the causes of our aging bodies. We all know that oxygen is necessary for life, but when the body gets too much oxygen (oxidation) it can be toxic. Oxidation in the body causes free radicals to form which are unstable and cause damage to the body and increase the speed of aging. Some of the free radicals are from the environment, toxins, and smoking. However, most of the free radicals are produced in our body as a result of food being converted into energy. Age-related diseases may be caused by the stress of this excess oxygen in the body. One way to combat the excess oxygen, or free radicals, is to eat foods that are rich in anti-oxidants.
The following are some the best foods to eat to fight the aging process. These foods are loaded with antioxidants and taste great, too.
>Whole Grains. These grains are digested more slowly than processed grains so they help prevent high blood sugar and diabetes. They are rich in fiber, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants which help lower the risk of such age-related diseases as cancer and cardiovascular diseases. Some of the best whole grains to try are quinoa, brown rice, and oatmeal.
>Leafy greens. These vegetables contain folate, calcium, and other nutrients that protect bones, brain function, and age-related eye problems. They may also reduce the risk of some cancers. The darker the green of the leaf, the more nutrients it contains. Some outstanding choices in this category are kale, spinach, and bok choy, as well as cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower.
>Berries. Berries contain the antioxidant compound anthocyanin which has been shown to slow the growth of certain cancers. This antioxidant can also help improve balance, muscle tone, and cognitive function. Be sure to try blueberries, cranberries, and blackberries.
>Nuts. Nuts are high in fat, but the fat they contain is the healthy omega-3 fatty acid. They are also loaded with protein and vitamins, including Vitamin E which may protect the eyes from age-related diseases. Eating nuts can benefit brain and cardiovascular health. They contain a compound that helps reduce inflammation. Almonds and walnuts are among the top picks for a health boost.
