Special memories held within my heart
as the brittle winds of winter for an instant remove my breath
from a body waking up with great rest
my body strong as is my mind
remembering the most special day in my life
in 1995
It was a little country church on a dirt road in Georgia
relatives had gone there for decades, lived, loved and rest there
I had been in distress, memories that held me captive
from living out fulfillment, my soul needing a change of address
As my three small children sat in the front row
the waters of the fount calling with the essence of a love never experienced
I stood in the water, then making my way to the hands
that leaned me back, submerged and then
as I arose, feeling like a child, I giggled
as the choir sang "Nothing but the blood"
and what could really wash away my sin?
Clean with the purest intent, now a light lit
My mental state in the need to undertand the way
of a miraculous God ~ all He was and IS...
as my long hair to my hips blond from the sun
but auburn in origin
pulled back now, damp with pure waters
placing it in a topsy tail
I made my way down the aisle to sit
My mind, body and soul filled, overflowing
with a peace and I can't remember the sermon
but one special lady as I was leaving
as she stroked my hair
and said "what a wonderful memory to be baptized on Easter day..."
As I had lost track of time and days in a medicated haze
I then realized it was Easter day!
And I guess today Palm Sunday is really my favorite holiday
The celebration of life
as they danced in the streets as He passed
lining the streets with the palm leaves, joyful tears...
And every Easter I remember
the day I almost forgot
In that water
and is but the essence of my soul
as hope surpassed the evils of the past
a renewal was born
and as that day He rose
on that little country road
He left me back here with a gift
as I sift those waters to find
The sanctity that is mine

I carry a memory of March 11, 1991, a blustery sort of day;
when I met you, stuffy nose and all, you were cordial anyway.
